Prof. Huamin QU, PhD Students and PhD Graduate Received Honourable Mention Award at CHI 2022

Prof. Huamin QU, Director of IPO, and his team of PhD students and a PhD graduate received Honourable Mention Award at ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems 2022 (CHI 2022) held on April 30 to May 5 at New Orleans, LA, USA, with the paper "Structure-aware Visualization Retrieval".

Prof. Naubahar SHARIF, Acting Head and Professor of the Division of Public Policy (PPOL), received a funding from the “2022 Cornell University – The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Global Strategic Collaboration Awards” program with Prof. Ding FEI from Cornell University on their project.

IIP Student Designed Award-winning AI Dyslexia Pre-screening System

Congratulations to Gabby FUNG, PhD in Individualized Interdisciplinary Program (Human Computer Interaction), for receiving several awards with her team’s AI Dyslexia Pre-screening System, including HKUST Student Team Award in HKUST-Sino One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2022.

ESPM PhD Student Gin CUATON Won 1st Prize For Best Proposal at ASPIRE League Student Workshop 2022

PhD student Gin GUATON from Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM) participated in the ASPIRE League Student Workshop 2022 from 4th to the 7th of July 2022 and won the first prize for best project proposal with his team with the focus on System Design for Connected Care.

T&M-DDP students won 2nd Runner-up at iGEM Competition

The HKUST “Fisherly” team, including Year 3 students Leon CHENG and Minjin GU studying Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP), won the second runner-up in the Undergraduate section and Best Safety and Security Award of the 2022 International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition.

Joint Government and Academia efforts to Study and Develop Science-based Regional Ozone and Photochemical Smog Control Strategies

Institute for the Environment (IENV) and the HKSAR Environmental Protection Department jointly held a press conference on 19 Sep 2022 to introduce the large-scale collaboration efforts to study and develop science-based regional ozone and photochemical smog control strategies led by the HKEPD and conducted by atmospheric research teams from HKUST and other universities.

HKUST CARE 2022 Creates an Opportunity of Stocktaking Policy and Measures on Hong Kong’s Climate Adaptation and Resilience

Government officials, business executives, financiers, investors, technologists, and climate action practitioners discussed Hong Kong’s adaptation and resilience planning in the face of climate change with scholars of HKUST at the three-day Climate Adaptation and Resilience Conference (CARE2022) which was kickstarted on 10 December, 2022 and attended by about 1,000 participants.

PPOL Policy Dialogue Series

In this academic year, the Division of Public Policy (PPOL), HKUST and the Department of Asian and Policy Studies, The Education University of Hong Kong will co-host 5 new dialogue sessions via Zoom to explore contemporary public policy challenges facing Hong Kong.

2022 Lightning Talks for IPO Faculty

The two sessions of Lightning Talks for IPO Faculty were held in person on 28 and 30 November 2022 respectively, providing a platform for IPO Faculty Members to exchange research and academic insights. There were 13 presentations in total, with topics ranging from weather observation, prediction, to evaluating policy challenges.

HKUST 30th Congregation

Over 300 graduates from Interdisciplinary Programs Office (IPO) and their guests attended the IPO session of HKUST 30th Congregation on 2 December 2022 at the Shaw Auditorium. Followed by the opening speech by Prof. Huamin QU, Director of IPO, IPO Class of 2022 graduates were presented on stage.

TEMG4950J “Corporate Consulting Project: Virtual Banking Strategies for livi”

The final presentation of TEMG4950J “Corporate Consulting Project: Virtual Banking Strategies for livi” was concluded on November 30, 2022. After 13-week coaching by Prof. Betty LIN, Associate Director of Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP), and meetings with subject experts from livi bank and IBM, our students have designed innovative customer engagement strategies and tailored virtual banking products to tackle the real world challenge.

IPO Orientation Activities

Each year, IPO and programs organize orientation activities for freshmen to enhance their soft skills, communication and bonding, including the Local Orientation Trip for Environmental Management and Technology (EVMT) and Sustainable and Green Finance (SGFN) students, and the Survival Camp for Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP) students.

IPO Students Spread Ideas to CEOs in The Melo Summit 2022

We are proud to have 7 IPO students shared their voices at The Melo Summit 2022. The Melo Summit was co-created by 15 leading CEOs in Hong Kong and the 20 Melo Fellows from HKUST. Using the “student as speaker, CEO as audience” concept, the Summit was consisted of TED Talk-like speeches, sharing of invited leaders and panel discussions.
